I remember the ads for $150 when I was young.

What is it in today's economy?? $450? And does that include clear coat. My white car needs a paint job and I've been told I can't get one that's of any value for less than four grand. Is that true? I don't enter it in collector competitions but I'd like it to last for a while until ......

Yeah and Earl Scheib was $79 as I recall around 1973-74!! (Y-Town) My brother got his 63 impala painted there. He also informed me if you wanted a real good job you could give your painter $25 cash ...LOL!!

One of my co-workers bought a 71 New Yorker off one of my brothers back in 1983. It had rust on the hood, trunk and quarter panels. I told her not to buy it because it was a gas hog. She didn't listen. One day she called me and asked if I could pick her up at Earl Scheib's paint and body shop in Nashville. She was having the car painted for $99.95. I told her not to do it, but she was adamant. 6 months later, all of the rust was coming back through. They didn't even sand the damned thing, just washed it and painted it! I did the prep work on a 93 Geo Prizm I had and got MAACO to paint it for $279 and they did a pretty damned good job. There was a little bit of overspray on the exhaust pipe and one window, but I didn't care. The overspray came off the window with a scraper and burned off the exhaust. So, derf, if you're willing to go to youtube and follow the tips on prepping the SC yourself and then letting MAACO put a paint job on it, you'll PROBABLY be okay for a few years. Just try to find out which painter has been there the longest and takes the most pride in his work. THAT'S the guy you want.

Well, I am not a body man ,but I painted 3 antique cars so I will use a 1 coat system and paint it some time. The main thing is that it runs out the way it should. I am fortunate enough to have 2 cars, so it only get used when I want to feel like a kid again with his first hot rod. I guess I am a big kid at heart. When I get back up North, I need to finish restoring a 1928 Hupmobile roadster. Here is a pic of my 1936 Hupp , 1924 Hupp and a 1960 Merc covert that I restored. I restored the Merc, all by my self.

Very very nice.

I remember listening to UnclJohn absolutely bitch about trying to prep his SC1 to paint it. The body on a Saturn coupe does not have one flat surface. Probably not on a sedan either for that matter. My point is, how do you sand the existing paint off down to the primer where is that not the approach. I've heard people say you can just scuff it up and new paint will stick to it, but there are areas where the paint is missing down to the primer, other areas were rest is coming through the plastic from the frame underneath, and areas where the paint is crazed. That stuff is going to have to come off so as soon as I take that off, am I not then all in on sanding the entire vehicle? Not saying I'm not willing to do it, just confused

Ohhhhhh, crap. I forgot all about the plastic panels, derf. I have NO idea what to do in these circumstances. Curse you Saturn! And to Hupp36, that 1936 Hupp of yours is absolutely BEAUTIFUL, man. Take a bow, you've earned it.
