Default Trans quit

Transmission quit all of a sudden today at a stoplight. I’ve got no forward or reverse gears but the speedometer still works when you push the throttle. I did have the hard shift problem when the transmission was warm but, This failure happened with the transmission was still cool. Any ideas?

I suspect a failed right front axle. The speedometer speed sensor reads from that side. Be careful park position will NOT prevent the car from rolling away.

I replaced both CV shafts less than a year ago. I have it on ramps and the rear wheels chocked, I looked at both axles while I had it in reverse and neither shaft was spinning. Aren’t the speed sensors on the hubs? So the shaft would have to spin to give a reading.?.

Inspected CV shaft on right side....it had popped out somehow(maybe I didn’t insert it all the way during replacement). Thank you 02 LW300 for pointing me in the right direction

On my stick shift car the rf wheel speed sensor drives the speedo. On a non abs stick shift car there is only a rf sensor. All automatic l series cars use the output speed sensor on the 4t45 transmission for speedo. Glad it was an easy fix. I have exploded outer ends before on a turbo Diesel Audi we had 30 years ago. Big bang and the ***** hit the street!
