Price for left CV joint replacement
#1
My left cv joint has started to click in my 2001 sl1. 111K miles on it. No tear/ leak in the boot. Can it safely be repacked or does the CV joint need to be replaced? How much should I expect to pay a mechanic for labor?

Much easier to just replace the axle assembly. Its a very easy 15 minute job. But a shop will charge at least an hour for labor plus over charge for the parts. So you''re looking at $250-$350 for a replacement. Or less than $100 to do it yourself.

Toby, yours is the first one I've ever heard of that went bad...I'm sure it happens, no vehicle is perfect, but they did such a great job of protecting them I just haven't heard of any going bad before...

I've had a couple go bad on me, but I attribute it to the fact that the boots were torn. In any event, if you're going to have it done, think seriously about having your existing shafts rebuilt. Pricing to rebuild will be about the same as buying after-market replacements, but there's a problem with some of the after-market units ... the over-all assembled dimension is not the same as the OEM shafts, and could cause you problems down the road. Just a personal opinion here ...........
