Default 2000 LS Speedo/Shifting Issues, this is a fun one

Hi everybody I'm new here... I recently bought my 2000 LS with 91K, Florida car, no rust and plan to drive it for the rest of my life, if parts availability doesn't screw me. Months ago I ran through a puddle, my speedo went nuts and my transmission stopped shifting. I replaced the wheel speed sensor (with a Delphi) on the front right wheel and it cured my issues. The old sensor appeared original and had a crack in the body of the sensor so I felt good about the repair. I have a new similar issue cropping up and was just curious if anybody else has experienced this.

In the morning (first start of the day, car been sitting about 11-12 hours) there is a dead spot in the speedo below 10-12 mph for the first couple miles. When this occurs the vehicle won't shift out of first gear. Instead of starting in Drive I start in 1 and when the speedo starts working I can shift through the gears or slap it into Drive. If I watch the speedo at each stop sign it'll eventually start responding below 10 mph as normal and I can go about my drive to work n Drive. When I go to lunch 4-5 hours later the car acts normally, when I go home at night 3-4 hours later the car behave as designed. I'm contemplating throwing a new axle with tone ring at it and a new sensor (again).

Any ideas before I load the parts cannon?

Thank you.

I know the the stick shift cars use the right front wheel speed sensor for the speedo. The automatic cars also have a speed sensor on the firewall side of the transaxle near the right axle. Those wires run up the back of the engine to the harness.check tis one also. 2000 years cars are different than all the later years with the pcm inside the car behind the glove box. I have factory service manuals for a 2002. Also check our Charm.li for good online manuals with schematics.

The only other sensor that is suspect(which I think is what you’re talking about) is the transmission output speed sensor. I think I bought one when I was playing with the wheelspeed sensor… I’ve basically bought one of everything for the car because I really do plan on driving it for the rest of my life. We have a Tech 2 at work I’m thinking I’m going to leave it here overnight and check it in the morning when it’s cold.

The transmission output sensor fixed it… I had one in the basement I had bought previously.
