Default 02 SC1 Idle problem,thanks sw2cam

Hi when I stop and the car is at idle the idle will climb
sometimes as high as 2500 rpm.It is a standard shift.
If I turn off the car and restart it returns to 775 which I believe is what it should be.I saw the post by dirtybart but he never told how he fixed his high idle problem.

I replaced the temp sensor because it would only go up to 1/4,it didnt change so I replaced the thermostat and now it
goes up to 3/8.

I had changed antifreeze 2 years ago.I used preston it said safe for all cars. I put in the dexcool when I replaced the thermostat, this time . Do You think I did any damage to the engine by using preston for 2 years?

Any ideas about what is causing the high idle would be appreciated.

Thanks sw2cam for the detailed info on the cam sensor =ignition problem code.Coils tested ok.New wires and cleaned contacts and dielectric grease solved the problem.

Can't see where Prestone is going to cause a problem. I've used it for over 10 years.

The guy who worked at advanced auto told me that anything other than dexcool would eat up the gaskets and ruin the engine.

??? I've never seen a gasket failure that I could attribute to the use of a Prestone product, and I've been working with cars off and on since before 1960. That being said, I do use Dexcool in my Saturns, but that's simply because that's what was in them when I bought them. Perhaps the AdvancedAuto geek has more experience than I -- I don't claim to have all the knowledge/answers .........

Not to take a cheap shot at advanced auto counter help, well yes I guess I am but they are not the only ones. Once the parts books went computerised finding counter help that could read stopped being a requirement for many auto parts stores. Or in many cases, reading English. Ive got OceanArcher by a couple of years, but not much and I am not sure when I drained and flush the original coolant (about 10 years ago) out of my 94 which at the time was not compatible with the standard used then, but that has long since been changed. As far as compatibility issues are concerned anyway. But I have been using Prestone and Peak lately with out any problems in fact that is about all I use. If you have a concern, drain, flush a lot of water through and drain some more and make sure the heater is on full to allow water to circulate through there too and when you are happy it is all flushed nice and clean fill it up with Prestone and don't worry about it. (50% anti-freeze and 50% water or there abouts)
At least I don't!

I believe you.
The guy at advance also said their was a class action suit against GM.He pointed outside and said the engine in his van had to be replaced because he didn't use dexcool. I had 2 gallons of preston at the house.
He wasn't a young kid but I guess he sure was a bald face lier.
He's should sell used cars.

What is the # 1 cause for your idle to climb up to 2500 rpm.If I turn the engine off then restart it resets itself and idles back to normal.
Clean or replace IAC?Can you clean it or test it I don't want to change anything if its not the problem .I cleaned the throttle body out good.Other than the idle going up by itself it runs good.

Default re: Class Action Lawsuit

OK -- looks like I'm gonna have crow for supper tonight.

I did some additional research into the Prestone/Dexcool controversity, and this is what I found out:

There WAS as class action lawsuit against GM, but it was BECAUSE of the use of Dexcool in certain Chrysler, Buick, Cheverolet and Oldsmobile engines. From the early 1990s until the mid 2000s, GM utilized water gaskets that were a mix of nylon and silicon rubber that would (1) degrade over time, causing a loss of fluids, and (2) the degradation of the gasket would cause/create a sludge buildup in the cooling system, necessitating expensive repair procedures.

Note - that these gaskets WERE NOT used in any of the Saturn vehicles.

This lawsuit was settled in 2008 for all applicable cars built between 1995 and 2004.

So, my apologies to your partsman ....... now excuse me while I go pick bird feathers outa my teeth

Personally I was not aware of this law suit. Between the years of 1995 and 2004 The newest car I owned was my 1994 Saturn and a 1991 Eagle Summit Wagon, a re-badged Mitsubishi XPO LRV, a baby van. Except for 1996 Chrysler T&C that I bought as a 10 year old 100,000 mile used car which turned out as one of the many problems that car had was an overheating problem caused by a crudded up radiator and neglect.
There were a lot of problems due to the fact the "new" anti-freeze being used was incompatible with Prestone at the time and if you were not aware of that and mixed the two your cooling system turned into brown crud thus plugging stuff up. And I don't think that had anything to do with what gaskets were used in the engine.
That impatcted at the time anyway a lot of folks and had to be watched for. I still have a partial can of the "Proper" Saturn Anti-Freeze in the garage when working on friends cars but, my own if impacted by the two different anti-freezes I drained and flushed and used Prestone as available.
Eventually Prestone forumlation changed to "compatible with all colors of anti-freeze" and I stopped worring about it.
Until Prestone started marketing Anti-Freeze + water at the same price as straight anti-freeze which means that the Gallon of liquid goes half as far and with more than one car that automatically raised the price of dealing with things.
Currently, I still buy straight anti-freeze when I find it from either Prestone or Peak.
Lets face it, if Danica endorses it, it must be good! Right?
