Well, since you just revealed some more critical information, I'd say you're on the right track with the starter and wiring. Usually getting one to start by banging on the starter is a good indication that either the wiring is getting funky or the bendix is going bad. Either way, you have some looking to do. Ground connections are critical on any vehicle. Make sure your ground connections are clean and tight. Good luck with it. I don't know where in FL you are, but I'm in Polk County between Lake Wales and Yeehaw Junction. Depending on which way this frigging hurricane turns, we may or may not have to evacuate. How about you? I'm about 60 miles from Vero Beach.

Get battery load tested. Check and clean all grounds as suggested. Pull starter and have tested. If all other things are fixed and banging on starter gets to start then replace starter. For the record there is no BCM in a 98 S car. I believe they did not get them until 99 or 2000.
