Ok just so everyone knows..most of you more then likely already know this but here it goes:





the oil filter is right by the engine and the socket needed is 332mm

And I've found you need an extension on your socket, not to mention a "shallow" socket. 1 1/4 inch seems to work fine if you don't have the metric

 

Wow, those are two gems I'll cherish forever!!

Now I'm armed with just enough information that I can confidently change my oil with the wrong tools (like a hack) in case I'm too cheap to buy the right ones.

I was having a hard time figuring where I could misuse my standard sockets on my car--thanks for the clarification.

Just for your information a 332mm comes out to be 13.0709 inch's so that would be the wrong size socket to use to remove the oil filter cap on an ION. You are right about one thing, the oil filter is rightby the engine, but you never said just where. Front, rear, right, left, top or bottom.


32mm would be the right size, and 32mm comes out to 1.25.984 in inch's soa 1 1/4socket fits the oil filter cap near perfect.


Don't blame him Derf, he read that wrong info on another website. He never had the socket in hand. I laughed the first time I saw 332mm posted, and laughed again when I saw it here.Edited by: sw2cam

 

PS: The location of the OIL FILTER is just left of center on the front of the engine at the top. You will see a black plastic cap over the cavity the cartridge filter goes into. That black plastic cap is the one you remove with a 32mm or 1 1/4 socket. The filter lifts out. Be sure to look at what end is up and down so you place the new filter in right.
