I have a 1992 Saturn 4 door 1.9 DOHC. I just purchased the car and was going to change the oil just out of safety. I drained the oil but when I took out the oil filter oil did not come out............ all that came out was a red liquidy fluid. When I started the car after putting everything together all the red fluid streamed out under the drivers front engine area. I tried to put the car in reverse and drive but nothing would work it would roll back like in Nuetral....

Hereare my questions:

1. I guess the fluid was transmission dluid, but did that just destory my transmission or can I just add new fluid?

2. Is there something I did wrong with changing the oil filter?I have changed oil on lots of trucks and have never had this happen.

Please help

If the filter you pulled is on the drivers side, facing forward and accessible from under the hood, that is the trans. filter. The engine oil filter is on the passenger's side, under the engine, above the right side drive axle. The question would be why fluid poured out when the engine was started. Was the filter loose or not installed? I wouldn't believe the transaxle was damaged from a momentary running without fluid or pressure.

I feel like an idiot, but everything makes sense now. I did change the transmission filter instead of the oil filter. Thank you so much
