As for what to do with the axles for moving the car once the engine & tranny are out:
I have a similar situation with my 1991 Geo Metro. I took bailing wire and made a loop on one end around the axles about 3/4s of the way toward the center of the car and tied the other end to the firewall.
The axle can rotate freely in the loop as long as you don't try to go too fast.

I am getting close to your mileage. I looked today and it will be 260,000 in a couple hundred miles.

Congrats, sir.

Tomorrow is fluids day, which should have been day 1 but I instead spent that doing easy stuff for some confidence. REALLY wish I could be doing this side by side and therefore have the ability to do steps in synch, then drop the engines right back in. Just not enough room.

I'll include a pic of the workspace tomorrow. My garage has a front "nook" on one side that allows me to pull the car in on almost a 45 angle to the garage door and point the nose towards the nook -- where I have already prepositioned the hoist bottom front legs to go under the front of the car. The nose is back far enough that I can pull the engine and back up the hoist (w engine) to clear the engine bay AND the nose of the car, set down, etc......

No nook, no swap. Yes, there are technically a few ways if I wanted it bad enough and had no other choice, but I have one.

Have to remember to clean up my tool boxes so you think I'm 110% organized.

Actually I recently did a rearrange n label.

Can someone tell my where my 10mm sockets keep getting to? It seems different every time......
.oh I tore another 2 30 yr old craftsman 1/4 in sockets. They have served me well.

What is the best way to clean up all these rusty fasteners that will get reused?
Is there a decent parts soak that will not cause my garage to become a fire hazard?

Diesel will not be tolerated

Not sure about mineral spirits

don't have permanent room nor need for a parts washer

Ideas??

Question kinda goes for the mounting holes under the hood that held the rusty fasteners. too I suppose blaster. I

Thanks

I found my 10 mm low profile socket. It was in the hollowed out outer section of one of the wheels of my floor jacks. The one I never use that sits in the nook that had actually been resting on a non flat angle for about 3 months. I leave the jacks touching the vehicle next to the jack stands as a double safety so it must have rolled in there. Or one of you put it there. Either way I am no longer without it.
