I hadn't realized fountains were disappearing. Sure enough though there's places we used to have fountains that are gone now. Fountains were a relic from the days before running water and cars. Used to be you'd put a fountain wherever you wanted to attract customers. People would come to gather water for their horses and households. Now they're just decorative. The town I work in actually added a fountain several years ago to an old bridge piling on the river. It looks like someone has aimed a fire hose straight up in the air. That water must shoot up at least 100 feet. Can't hardly get to it and there's no pool around the spout so no tossing coins in that one.

They have a nice “water feature” at the Oregon Coast Aquarium. It is a pumped cascading stream down to the entrance, however there is a sign that states the stream does not run on coins so please keep them. There are lots of coins in the bottom though. Lol

I feel as if most of the fountains that would be found in public places have been torn down and replaced, or somehow monetized behind the paywall of a museum or private golf course. I completely forgot how often I would come across fountains when i was younger and throw a penny in one and make a wish. I think part of the problem can also be attributed to the fact that droughts are becoming more frequent, or maybe Nestle is just bottling up all the water for the future water war.

Back in the 80's, there were several fountains in downtown Nashville. It wasn't uncommon to see one full of soap suds from time to time either. Two of the banks I delivered packages to removed their fountains because of this. The got tired of having to drain them and clean them. Maybe that factored in too? One idiot with some soap is all it took to screw it up for everyone.
