It may be the middle digit, but, could it be a flashback to a Lava Lamp image? Kind of an evolutionary thing-lava or magma morphing into a Saturn Sky? I know I'm reaching a little here, but I am a child from the 70s. It could even be part of a paisley pattern which I wore proudly in those days.
