I''m a mechanic looking to buy a used saturn, I''ve grown to like them after working on a few. My only needs are one with a/c, power windows/locks, and obd2.

My question is, are there any models to stray away from? I''ve only worked on about a dozen but I have no idea what models are what or whats out there. Can someone give me a rundown of the models?

 

all i know is i have a 97 SL2 and this thing runs like a champ. 190k miles and i bought it for $500. Only had to replace the water pump in the 2 years ive owned it. Great daily driver

 

The S-series cars are spectacular. My mom has had 3 and I have one. They are great cars. We have had an L200 but we like the s-series much better.

 

Well - I have never owned any of the ''SC'' series, so I cannot comment on them, but I do currently own a ''93 SW2 and an ''02 L200. Both vehicles are in very good shape, and are not oil burners. Approaching 160k on the wagon, and just cracked 100k on the L200.


Current plans are to run them till the wheels fall off, then put new wheels under them. They both exceed 25mpg around town, and over 30mpg on the highway > I am a believer

 

Stay away from the 1991/1992 model year S-Series. Not that there is really anything wrong with them, but a lot of parts are particular to those years.

1993-2002 sedans, wagons and coupes are mechanically basically the same.

 

Thats what I like to hear, I figured they are mostly the same.

What''s the break down of all the series?

L series is more of the 4 door coupes yea?
S series more sporty etc?

I like the look of the ion body style, and I "think" the L series, although sometimes I can''t tell because there''s no badging on the back or anything. 4 doors would be nice

 

The S-Series are the line of Saturn sub compacts. The SL, SL1 and SL2 (sedans), SC1 and SC2 (coupes), SW1 and SW2 (wagons).

The L-Series was Saturn mid size cars. They were sedans and wagons. No coupes.

 

How many variations of the 4 cylinder motors are there?

Any cons about the v6''s?

 

Three. All are 1.9L. Theres the TBI SOHC, MPFI SOHC and MPFI DOHC.

TBI SOHC (85HP):
1991-1994 SL, SL1, SC1, SW1

MPFI SOHC (100HP):
1995-2002 SL, SL1, SC1, SW1

MPFI DOHC (124HP)
1991-1992 SL2, SC
1993-2002 SL2, SC2, SW2
