I just picked up a 97 SL1 4-door. I've got a roughly 1000w stereo I'd like to import from my Escort, and was wondering about the technical challenges I'd get. I haven't been able to find sizes on the stock speakers, the fronts look to be 6.5's, but I have no idea about the rears.

What size is the stock alternator, and are there higher-amperage versions available?

Where is the gromet through the firewall? Is there one on the drivers and passenger's side?

Anything else I should know before ripping the inside of my "new" car apart? [img]smileys/smiley1.gif[/img]

 

Front and rear speakers are 6.75"

The factory alternator is 85amps @ 2000+rpm. Higher amp alternator are available. Its just your standard GM CS-130 alternator. But you shouldnt need one as long as the alternator is functiong correctly. I've had higher powered systems in my Saturns and never needed a high power alternator. Just the factory or factory replacement alternator with an Optima battery does fine.

Drivers side, yes, passenger side, no. If your car is an automatic, from the engine compartment, look to the right of the brake booster and below where the harness goes through the firewall. You will see a grommet that plugs the hole that would be for the clutch slave cylinder on manual equipped cars. If you have a manual, just poke a hole through the grommet with the wriring harness going through the firewall.
