Default 2003 VUE v6 AWD problem

Just bought this 2003 v6 AWD VUE 2 years ago and it was driving good then the transmission went out, replaced it with a used one ( the shop which did the job closed now and will not reopen) and was good until the snow season. All of the sudden when I drive up hill the VUE has no gear at all. I can start the car, shift it but nothing engage just like empty. Now the car sitting in my yard and I have a friend who is a retired mechanic said probably a bad TCM. Any info and help will be appreciated.

Nothing in any shifter position? Does the engine only start in park and neutral? Do the back up lights light up in reverse(use the parking brake so it doesn’t roll away)? Does it have a dip stick and if so is it full of oil?

02 LW300 thanks for the reply

the engine can start both in park and neutral, no back up light in reverse, the oil level is good ( actually just change both engine and transmission oil ). The whole thing just feel empty, nothing engaged and I can shift the transmission in any position.

Will it start in any other position? Sounds like a possible shift cable failure. It should do something unless the input shaft broke or the torque converter bolts fell out. The reverse lights should work if the shifter is moving the linkage at the transmission.

I will take a look next Wednesday during my day off, 6 days of work make me have no time to take care that VUE. Thank you very much for the info and I will definitely look in to that.
