I have a 99 SL2 that has what sounds like bad timing problem when I accelerate.. but the noise itself seems to be coming from the drivers side (trans area) any thoughts about what it could be? It only does it under load... when driving normal conditions it doesn't make any noise

thanks,

mark

thanks Mike I'm going to check the motor mount..I had the resonator and flex coupler replaced just the other day. the muffler shop checked the catalytic converter they said it sounded fine of course that's one persons opinion.. Is there anything else that would cause this metallic rattling sound? The car has 207000 miles but the engine, transaxle, cv axles and clutch are all 50k miles old.. should I be expecting anything peculiar at this stage besides a squeaky clutch pedal?? I appreciate it

Get under the car and tap the catalytic converter with a rubber mallet or with your hand wrapped in a towel. See if it makes the same sound. If you just had some exhaust work done and the sound recently started, it all could be related.Edited by: Low Saturn

I agree with what he said. It basically just the car being so old that things are rusting and getting loose, then starting to rattle. Do you feel anything in the steering wheel, or just a noise

No everything else is pretty tight... the muffler shop guys said it sounded like it was coming from the transmission...which has me worried because the engine, axles and clutch were all replaced 50k miles ago.. although the car itself has 207k so I'm hoping it's not in need of a tranny overhaul already. I just bought the car recently and really need it to last me for a while.. heck I'm not complaining too bad cuz it only set me back 2,000 but still...

Thanks for the help and input.. I really appreciate it!

If its really coming from the transmission, then its probably the differential pin working its way out.

This it what may be in your near future. Its out of a 1996 SC2 I just picked up. Its actually pretty common.

It requires replacement of the transmission if the pin breaks through. When I replace a transmission that this has happened to, I disassemble the transmission, remove the differential and weld the pin in place. This way it cant slide out.

I actually like this "feature" of the Saturn transmissions. It renders a perfectly good car useless. Then I usually pick them up for a steal and fix them for nearly nothing.
