SES Errors
My son's 2002 S Series with the 1.9 SOHC motor failed emmision testing this week. The SES light has been on and off now for a while. The codes it failed for were;
P0341 - Camshaft Position Sensor "A" Circuit Range/Performance
P0404 - EGR Control Circuit Range/Performance
P1404 - EGR Closed Position Performance
Any thoughts? I just recently replaced the radiator last weekend for leaking side tanks. Maybe something got disconnected?
Cleaned out the EGR Valve today, it was pretty carboned up. For the first time that I can remember, I actually heard the air/smog pump turn on. I could not find the cam sensor? The Chiltons manual shows it to be what looks like around the feul rail. Is it located somewhere else on a 04 1.9? Cleared the codes and so far so good. I'll give it a couple of days
SES Light came back on within 10 minutes of driving time after only cleaning the EGR valve. This weekend I replaced the plugs and wires. The light came back on after 30 minutes this time. Any other ideas? Is there a way to check the current code(s) on the car without a code reader?
Update...the SES light has been turning off and then back on again. The local parts place said that would indicate a engine mis-fire. I replaced the plugs and wires weeks ago and both coil packs this morning. Again, after 30 minutes the light came back on! There is also a coolant leak somewhere, not overly visiable, but he has to add to it on a weekly basis. Are these two problems connected or should I just have the local shop track this down? Snow here and cold weather doesn't make for much fun being a ShadeTree mechanic. ANY help will be appreciated!
Thanks!
George

we cant help you trace through the maze as you work on the car unless you can post the actual codes. For example I changed X then cleared codes and still got codes Pxxx and Pxxx.
You can get codes read for free at Autozone or similar -- just make sure they give you the Pxxx numbers -- then post them here.
SES light will usually be blinking when the engine is actively misfiring -- just turning on, then later off, is not linked to a misfire situation (I don't believe)
As for P0341 -- there is no cam sensor on a 1.9 S car engine -- this code usually indicates issues with the ignition system -- but you're already onto that....
