I recall the dealer saying the timing chain should be replaced at 100,000 miles. Last week on "Click 'n Clack" (National Public Radio) they said do NOT replace chain unless it starts making noise. My SL has 95,000 and I am wondering what should I do.

 

If it ain't broke don't fix it. I've got 190,000 on mine and never touched it. But then everyone has an opinion. Can't really fault the dealer for wanting to get under your hood. Guess he has to eat too.Edited by: MINICooperS

 

What happens when the timing chain goes on a 97 SL1? Major engine work required? I was quoted $700 roughly for replacing the chain before it breaks. I have a Ford Contour that had a timing belt fail and it was a lot to fix it and has never run the same. Nothing is wrong with the SL1. I uses a bit of oil but no leaks and no other complaints. I have 160k on it and no record of replaced chain. Does the chain always make noise before breaking? I only paid $1300 for the car so $700 is a lot but on the other hand, if it will run another 100k miles on a new $700 chain, it might be worth while. Any thoughts?

 

Yep.............valves hit the pistons. Hey do it or don't do it, just no bitching either way

 

If you are the original owner and have religously changed your oil and never let it run low, the chain should last over 200,000 miles. If the answer is no to any of the above, change it at 100,000.


"If it aint broke, dont fix it" doesnt apply here. A $200 timing chain kit and a few hours of time is better than several hundered rebuilding your engine.
