P1404 - EGR valve?
#1
I have CEL code P1404 coming up on my 2001 SL1. Is this definitely thrown by the EGR valve? I pulled the valve out expecting it to be stuck open or closed, but the plunger moved in and out freely. Is there anything else I should try, or should I just bite the bullet and buy a replacement EGR valve? Thanks!
[edit] Also, I disconnected the negative battery terminal and then reconnected it and started the car. I expected this to clear the code, but the check engine light was on immediately. Does this point to more of an electrical problem, or does this method not clear the codes on saturns?

You need a scanner to clear codes. EGR is common problem on this vehicle. Remove EGR and spray the pintle with carb cleaner to remove soot and buildup. Just keep the fluid away from the seal at the rear of the pintle rod and out of the electronics. Also, when you're done, install a Dorman 47007 or Tomco gasket. The screen in these aftermarket gaskets keeps the opening from carboning up again.

the EGR trouble code, can and will stem from a CTS or a CPS problem, but, if its the EGR, and the car isn't doing anything else funky, just clear the code, autozone, or whom ever will clear it for free and then get used to the whole, SES light thingy
