Exclamation No reverse on a 2000 saturn sw2 automatic transmission

Driving the wagon and went to back out a a driveway and just that quick lost reverse.
1st thing done was changed tranie fluid and filter
2nd was new solenoids
3rd new nut on input shaft
4th adjusted the neutral switch for continuity
5th checked all fuses
Also we get the code P0732 when it shifts from 1st to 2nd. Shifts great except still no reverse!
Any more things to look for and what are your thoughts on what could be wrong

Moved to sedan section since for whatever reason the people who last coded this site seemed to think the S wagons were unimportant

did you torque the input nut to spec?
P0732 is often caused by a loose input shaft nut, and you may experience rough shifting into/out of 2nd.

How many miles on the car?

Did you have any delay shifting into reverse before this happened. Or outright reverse slam?

Usually the combo of a rebuilt valvebody with good solenoids (I doubt yours are new) and replacement and tightening of the input shaft nut to spec solves these issues.

Otherwise you are most likely looking at internal tranny issues

shifting from 1st to 2nd a couple of days prior it started slamming into gear
was going the wrong way on a street went to turn around in a driveway and reverse was just gone!
car has just a lil over 150,000
solenoids have been replaced

I'm not a tranny specialist but will contact one who may be able to better help you diag your issue.

Default TAAT No Reverse, code P0730

Hi there Kelly. Sorry to hear about your problem. I'm a diagnostician at a transmission shop, and have been mechanic for over 30 years. I would take your vehicle to a reptubale repair shop that specializes in transmission rebuilds. Sounds like you have addressed all the issues that could throw a code P0730, except replacing the transmission, or having it rebuilt. I would say at this point, the trans most likely needs to be rebuilt.

I'll try to explain what's going on in reverse. There are 4 clutch packs, 1 for each of the 4 forward gears. Each clutch pack has a corresponding gear. Reverse is obtained by the transmission applying one of the clutches (2nd gear clutch in the TAAT) and with hydraulic pressure from the valve body, a servo slides an idler gear up the counter-shaft to connect 2nd gear with the main-shaft to obtain reverse. I would say the servo is leaking causing the idler gear not to mesh, or hook-up with 2nd gear. If the idler gear doesn't mate with 2nd gear, you will only have an applied 2nd gear clutch pack, but still no reverse. The car may even pull forward in reverse instead of going backwards. On the other hand, if the engine rpm goes up a little during the 1-2 shift, (known as a flare) the 2nd gear clutches are slipping. If the fluid smelled burnt, before you had it flushed, then for sure it's the clutches, if not, I would say a hydraulic leak in the servo hydraulic system. I have seen both conditions. With 150K miles, the transmission is just worn out, and well past it's 100K life expectancy. Very few make it this far, and I have yet to see on OEM TAAT (factory unit) make it past 180K.

I hope this helps explain why nothing else has worked. TAAT's were not one of GM's best transmissions, and not very easy to diagnose cretin problems. That's why I suggest taking it to someone who knows what their doing. Firestone and Goodyear are great for tires and alignments, but when it comes to transmissions, you only want to have it done once. It may cost more to repair than the car is worth, but that's going to be your call.

Best of luck to you. Please let us know what you decide to do, and how things turn out.
