Default key will not turn or transmission come out of park

I have a 99 Saturn SL1 and am having a problem that has gradually gotten worse. I was having problems of getting the key to turn and getting the transmission out of park. I was able to get past it by moving pulling hard on the steering wheel in one direction or anther, allowing the key to turn. That has finally stopped working and I an unable to get the key to turn at all or the car out of park

I was able to get the key to move and the car out of park by rocking the vehicle. Any suggestions as to what could be the long term problem?

Two different problems ....

Ignition key problem is due to a failing anti-theft pin in the steering column. Possible that the ignition key is worn down enough so the lock is not sure if you are the right owner. Have a new key cut from code (at the dealer's).

Transmission locking in park is usually due to parking on an incline, and not using the parking brake, relying solely on the PARK/LOCK pawl in the transmission. Not a good idea to do that, although most people are guilty of the offense (me included). Learn to set your parking brake when on a hill BEFORE you shift into park ....
