Hello, I'm hoping maybe someone can give me insight.

I have a 1995 saturn SL2 sedan w/DOHC and te car was sitting for awhile before i bought it.After i bought it noticed a few time fuel gauge slow to move once when i put 20.00 into it, but seemed to move down faster as i drove.

Well today i filled it and had key turn on but car off and looked to see where i was at and seen gauge at half tank than when i was done got into car and now gauge was below E.

Started car and gauge stayed at E.

Now is the fuel level indicator in the fuel pump on these models or maybe another suggestion ie: the instrument cluster?

I did tap the cluster few times see if it was stuck and nothing.

Any help be appreciated..

I beleive there is a mechanical arm with a float on the end that comes in contact witha grid as the arm moves across the grid, it changes the voltage output going to your cluster. Sounds like the arm is stuck. I would run a can of seafoam through it and maybe give the gas tank a good thumping to see if you can't knock it lose. If things are getting sledged up that bad, I would be worried about the pump going bad. I just replaced the fuel pump in a 2000 SL2 yesterday and I did a 98 s-10 about 3 weeks ago. Both had the same pump design. Crappy intank pumps!!!! Good luck with it.

If you can get a Haynes Manual it describes how to check the sending unit with an Ohm meter. The connector is on the driver's side in the trunk area behind the carpet. It should read about 236 ohm's with the tank empty or about 35 when it's full. Thisshould give you a good idea if it's the sending unit or the guage.
