Default 96' SL2 Rpm and cold starting issues

About two weeks ago I went to start my car, and it was a real rough start and the rpms were real low and jumping between 300-1000 and I hit the gas and it straightened it out. Well then I turned it off and looked under the hood and I noticed the hose coming from the engine to the air intake was out of the air intake. so I took it and put it back in and I noticed it was a straw with duct tape on it in the end of the hose, so I went to the store got a new hose and a plastic piece to go in it... replaced all that and it still is starting rough in the mornings and after it sits for 6+ hours, and the rpms start at like 200 and takes a couple seconds wit the gas pushed down to rev up and straighten up... I have no idea what is wrong but im assuming it has something to do with the air intake or a leak in one of the cylinders. any help would be much appreciated!

Is your check engine light on? If so bring it to your local parts store and have them check the trouble codes. It can be caused by many things from bad vacuum to several sensors that could cause the issue.

yes the light is on, but I was on for a couple months before this and I had it checked and they said it was a sensor that is on the driver side on the manafold (forget what it was called) and that it was around $80 for a new one, they said it was sending slow signals if that helps you figure out what sensor it is. Thanks.

If you can have it checked again. write down the trouble code and post it on here. We can probably give you better direction after that. There are many sensors that can go bad. Many in which will effect the way it runs and idles. It could possibly be the O2 sensor. Does that sound familiar? It is located on the exhaust manifold and can cause this issue. Also you will need to fix it before trying to get it inspected. It will not pass with a check engine light on.

correction. its looked up as an Oxygen Sensor. Sorry Im in the medical field and we abbreviate everything lol. There are various options available from 50-80 dollars at parts stores. Fairly easy to install with basic tools. But MAKE SURE you have it checked again to be sure thats what it is.

i just had it checked again on my way home from work and it is the oxygen sensor, but it started fine this morning so that was kinda weird since its been doing it for a couple weeks now every morning. the next question is they said that there is two different sensors and I need to figure out with one it is, any ideas of which one or how i can find out?

Okay, im back. I changed the oxygen sensor yesterday and I am still having the issues... This morning it started fine but the rpms were high and the engine was reving up on its own. So today after work I went and started the car and it sputtered as it was starting and the rps would drop down dramiticaly and go back up then drop and etc. for about 1 min... Any more ideas?
Thanks, Michael

Like SW2CAM said, ECTS. Electronic coolant temperature sensor. Get one from a genuine GM dealer along with the pig tail. Aftermarket won't work properly.
