Default 96 sl2 child safety lock problem

I just got my car today and when I was going to open back passanger driver side door it wouldnt open , did the switch to unlock nothing and reached in and it opened then I figured that the bar that connects to the outside handle might have fell off or the handle is broken well just say I found the child lock and switched it to lock from the inside now cant open door , (felt like a donkey).
any way to shim or unlock the child switch or should I just replace the handle any ways and fix it?
THX.

you might be able to get it open with a slim jim if the rods are still attached to the lock mechanism -- which, if you were able to unlock and open from the inside, it sounds like they are.

Thx, Derf, check this out, thought up a idea and my buddy did it but, what we did was get a plastic ( very flexable) shim type of deal about 10 inch long by 2-3 inch wide and about where the bend is in the door just push the peice of plastic in the crack and just push the child safty back to the off position, It worked, gonna fix the door handle now.

That's great for the latches that have a slide latch, but what about the ones which require a 1/4 turn of a screw head device?
