2001 SL2 has power but no spin from Starter
I have replaced the battery, the cables are good. I have jumpered the wire from hot to solenoid and get nothing from starter, no click o anything. The car has been starting without hesitation until yesterday. Can the starter just die or could it be the key switch?
If you are jumpering from the hot side of the battery to the solenoid control connection, you are bypassing ALL other items in the circuit. If the starter does not click and spin with a hookup like that, then the starter has failed, and needs to be replaced.
(Of course, this is assuming that the connection point you are getting +12v from is REALLY good)......

meaning you are using large enough cable ( low enough gauge) to carry sufficient current without resistive loss to ensure you're supplying juice to activate the solenoid....

I'm the one with the issue, OA -- don't know what I was thinking but I was running out the door when I typed that response -- I fixed my earlier post......

Yah, I took a steel bolt and went from the battery cable to the solenoid lead on the back of the solenoid, and to the braided wire input for dc motor power. I only saw a small spark which made me think the solenoid was shorted. Nothing looked corroded on the starter or solenoid . I gues I have to crawl uder and take out the starter next. Thanks Guys!!
Try the hammer trick while you're down there -- sometimes the solenoid will get hung up....whack it with a hammer a few times and then try to start...if it starts but continues to act up, you'll need to replace the starter .....
Let's face it -- the starters they put in the 2000-2002 cars musta come from China (or maybe Borneo). Anyway, they seem to suffer a lot of failures, although I've never seen a recall or notification on them ....
