2000 SL1 Shifting Problems
My 2000 SL1 has 167,000 miles on it. For the last 100,000 miles, the automatic transmission has acted funny intermittently.
When driving in stop and go traffic all of a sudden the transmission will quit shifting. The problem will persist until I pull over, turn off the car, and restart. Then it usually works fine again for a while.
The other problem occurs when shifting into reverse. When the car is warm and I shift into reverse the transmission clunks hard into reverse. A long time ago I put some transmission treatment/conditioner in and backed the car up to a tree and let it run in reverse for 15 minutes. It may have helped some, but not completely.
I've changed the filter and fluid a couple times and the fluid has never smelled burnt.
Has anyone had these same problems? Any solutions/ideas?
I'm not going to rebuild the transmission yet because it works fine 99.9% of the time.
