Default 1999 Saturn SL2 Deceleration Problem

My daughter purchased a used 1999 SL2 yesterday with 132000 miles on it. There seems to be an issue with decelerating after you take your foot off the gas pedal and approach a stop. You have to brake heavily to slow down the car. It doesn't decelerate quickly like most other automatic transmission vehicles that I've driven. Is that normal for a Saturn? If not, what could be going on with this car? I noticed the RPM's stay up there for quite a while after removing my foot from the accelerator. I don't recall this vehicle behaving this way during the test drive, but since she picked it up, it's been doing this. Any suggestions as to what might be going on would be appreciated. Thanks!
