Default 1998 Saturn SL to transmission sticks in first gear

98 Saturn SL two transmission sticks in first gear from time to time when taking off. If I throw it in neutral shut ignition off restart it throw it back in gear as I’m moving it shifts OK again. Check engine light comes on when this happens. After a couple restarts it will be off again.

Please stop by AutoZone or similar and have them read the codes for the check engine light. The light needs to be on for them to capture the codes.

Please post the codes as Pxxxx where the X's are numbers. Please do not post the supposed description of the code that the AutoZone guy gives you. Ask for a printout of the codes.

And for the love of Saturns, do not buy anything they try to sell you.

I agree with derf. And especially when he says DON'T buy anything from the Zone. I worked for them for 5 years and to this day the ONLY thing I'd buy from them is a Duralast Gold series battery. Nothing else.

Likely a solenoid issue/valve body issue/???
Could also be an issue with the Transmission Control Module (TCM) getting flaky.

Just guessing.

The codes should tell you.
