Default Saturn Relay 8 passanger conversion

You can convert your Saturn Relay to 8 passenger van by installing a 3rd middle seat. It's especially easy on models with trim 1 and 2, where you have the bucket seats and a large space in between them. If you have two captain chairs, you'll just need to get three bucket seats later.

Chevrolet Venture came with 3 seats in the middle row. Since Relay is based on Chevy Uplander and that one is built on Venture frame (maybe with some manor differences) point being that there are still middle seat hooks in your Relay, under the carpet. You can feel for them with your fingers through the carpet. What you want to do is expose them, so you can mount your middle seat. First, take a trip to your local junk yard with a Relay or Uplander that has bucket style mid seats. You need the plastic trim covers that frame the hooks in the floor and you want to get a bucket seat (or 3 if you're converting from captain chairs). Make sure you get an extra hip buckle bolt, you'll need two of them. One will come with the seat and you'll need a second one. I'll explain later.

Then you take out your middle seats, pop all the hook plastic covers so you can see the carpet holes dimensions. Use those to approximate where you need to cut the carpet to expose the middle seat hooks, feel under the carpet with your fingers and cut little at a time so you don't cut too much and make things ugly. Use a fresh box knife to cleanly cut the carpet. Front hooks you cut in a rectangle and install your plastic trim cover, rear you just make slits and fold them down, the same way the factory ones are done to each side on existing seats.
Then you put all the plastic hook trim back and place your middle seat in the middle and you're done! Well, not really, cause you don't have what? Correct, you don't have a belt, so it's useless But don't fret and read on
Then you go on Amazon and order a four point racing harness (3 inch wide is pretty nice), you remove the hip belt buckle receiver from one side of your middle seat and bolt your 4 point harness there, plus on the other side, there's a hidden welded nut behind the seat upholstery. Feel for it with your finger and make a cross cut with a sharp knife to expose this welded nut and use your second bolt you brought with you from the junk yard to install your 4 point harness there. Shoulder straps of your 4 point harness can be held together using carabiners to the head rest posts (so they don't slide down the seat sides). And finally you want to get two beefy threaded quick link carabiners (make sure they'll pass through the 4 point harness attachment holes) and install your shoulder harness ends through those and through the seats child seat anchors (LATCH) but from behind the seat. So now you have a proper

restrain system in place, enjoy!
