The wagon got hot on the granddaughter this weekend. I was away and they left it at a neighbors house halfway up the hill. Went and got it last night, drove it up on the trailer and brought it home. Runs fine and the coolant returned to the normal level now that it has cooled off. I let it run for a few minutes and the heater hoses felt warm so I don’t expect further issues. This car derates if it gets too hot and it was not driven after derating. The thermostat is in the valley under the intake manifold, so it is another project. More to follow….
Could it possibly be the cat con stopping up, Andy. That would account for a loss of power, but of course not for it running hot. You're the mechanic, I'm not. Just throwing a loss of power idea out there. I'm sure you'll have it fixed in short order.
The OEM thermostat is a Motorad, the replacement from NAPA is the same. It comes with the housing, the original failed closed. The top came apart and twisted to the side. The car is back together and 20 mile test drive. The car never lost coolant.
I'm happy to hear you were right about the diagnosis, Andy. Also happy to hear you've got it fixed and back on the road again. Of course, I'm probably not quite as happy as your grand daughter! LOL What's next on the project list?
I am building an engine and transmission for a 2004 Ford Expedition 4x4. I plan to use this one while I update my 84 GMC crew cab. I am replacing the engine and transmission and finishing some much needed bodywork. I built this truck in 2005 and it needs some love.
I went and picked up a John Deere Gator today so I have that also. It needs electrical repairs. Always something to do.
