My gas gauge keeps dropping out and coming back. I could have a full tank and it goes to empty, kicks the light and slowly comes back to full or whatever level I have. What causes this and how can I fix it.

You probably need to replace the sending unit in the tank. This is not an easy project without a hoist and a transmission jack.
