Default Magic smoke

My steering column has started to let the magic smoke out and the wipers swipe when not commanded! It may just be the wiper switch but the tilt column is also loose like something broke in the latch. Looks like snow over the holiday weekend so I will be driving the truck until the roads clear up. I am very happy to have my 4x4 back on the road. They really don’t salt the roads here so the snow has to melt on it’s own.

Oh, you're talking about your car. When I saw the words magic smoke, I was thinking it was something else. LOL

It was just the switch and GM in their infinite wisdom built a complicated tilt setup for this car. To get more settings on the tilt wheel GM doubled up on the latches with two sets of teeth and two different sized locking pins. One of the pins slid out on my column so it was an easy fix. I also replaced the high beam indicator bulb since I was in the area.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year friends!

Well, Duane, Andy is the resident L Series guru. Just be patient and I'm sure he can tell you what to do. Oh and welcome to the forum. I used to live in Lake Wales, FL and don't miss it at all.

Welcome Duane! I replaced the wiper switch and solved the problem. Remove the clamshell cover on the steering column and one small screw and the switch slides out. Amazon or Rock Auto for these types of parts.
