1) You have the same info as I do.
2) The part that you posted a picture of, the part that I posted a picture of, the part that Andy posted a picture of: They are one in the same and are an aftermarket match.
3) The picture of the part for sale is identical to the picture in the screenshot from the GM online parts store and the diagram,
4) The part is available for sale in new condition.

If you cannot afford the price of the new part, then tell us. Doesn't seem to be the case if you would consider an engine swap over a new cooler though.
If you don't WANT to put out the cash for a new part, then just say so. Of course that is the equivalent of having strangers find you a medium sized needle in a haystack, only to have you toss it over your shoulder and quietly walk away.
------------------------------
By all means, go out in a wet marshy field and lay under an Ion level whatever matches.
Then you can snag a nice internally corroded replacement (from the old coolant eating away at it sitting in the yard), install it on your ride, start er up, and watch it leak just like the one you have, only from a different spot.

There once was logic in this post

As frankly, you're giving me Goalie head.
bro I'm not sure what you got going on but I've looked at the web sites and looked up the part numbers that you guys have generously provided for me which I do appreciate. Those web sites and those part numbers do fit my vehicle but they are no longer in production and are no longer available I called the phone numbers and went to the sites that you've been posting pictures of with no success. So unless you have a specific link to that specific part that says it is available in brand new condition send it to me. I'm not really sure what you're ranting about because unless I'm missing something the parts are not available. Again if you have a specific link to that specific part send it to me. Because the ones you guys have sent on eBay and on the other sites either A. do not fit the 2.4 or B.are no longer available.

I have been discussing this with our Ion guy and he and I agree that the oil cooler will work on your 2.4. He has a Lsj supercharged engine with an oil cooler. It does not make sense for GM to make a different cooler for a one off application like your 2.4. The Ecotec engines take all the same components with just a bore and stroke change.

Dude,

The links to the part may be on websites that have incorrect fitment guides.
I have seen Amazon be wrong and I have seen e bay sellers pull their fitment guides out of their butts, claiming fitment with 2003 model year S cars -- which do not exist.

There were two different "designs" of this part if you read the sub description. I am yet to find a listing specifically for the "other" design.
The part has 2 GM part numbers. Why? Different applications? Different revisions? Hell if I know,

How's this for a strategy?
1) Purchase the part through amazon -- but NOT until you are ready to install it.
2) As long as you take it out of the box, snap a pic of the side which mates with the engine, and put it back in the box away from the car, then you can do an INSTANTANEOUS compatibility check when you pull the old one by comparing it to the pic.
3) If it matches, swap it in, refill the fluids, and put this ordeal in everyone's past.
4) If it somehow doesn't fit, you can return the spotlessly clean part to amazon stating wrong part or doesn't fit, and you are out the cost of shipping back a 2lb item.

Most ebay parts sellers sell for less, but they also do not accept returns unless the parts are defective.

Aside: 2006 and 2007 Ions used the same Gen II Ecotec block
From Wikipedia:

The LE5 is a larger 2.4 L—2,384 cc (145.5 cu in)—version of the Ecotec. Both the 88 mm (3.5 in) bore and 98 mm (3.9 in) stroke are larger, and Variable Valve Timing on the intake and exhaust improve low-end torque. Compression is 10.4:1. Power is 164–177 hp (123–132 kW) and torque is 159–170 lb·ft (215–230 N·m). So if it is the same block, I am going to GUESS for 2007 that they removed whatever paths fed and returned the oil to the cooler, and made the coolant routing for the cooler for 2007.
So if the 2007 is putting out more torque and HP with no oil cooler, you can probably delete yours by redoing that section to be as it is in 2007.
If you are lucky, the cooler is directly mounted inline with the flow to or from the filter.
This might mean replacing the part that the filter mounts to. Dunno. Maybe possible. Maybe dreaming. Just trying to think outside the box

I'll bug Jerama (19Bonestock88), our resident Ion expert, to see if he can read through my garbage and look under his dead ion redline and not dead Ion something or other to see how ot was configured.

Things you should know about me:

Enjoy helping
Not overly patient, but I am at the beginning
Frustrated when I spend chunks of my free time on trying to help people that have been presented with a likely solution but continue to reject it based on sketchy or inconsistent information (in this case, multiple fitment table differences)
Sarcastic--why? Because.
Mentally unstable. The other regulars can vouch for that.

***************************
So what is the pure probability that ordering the aforementioned part off Amazon will solve your issue? Exactly 50%.

Prob higher based on the exploded diagram in the picture above.

It either fits or it doesn't.

Only 1 way to find out.

So basically all the Ecotec share the same block structure... my guess is that an oil cooler from the LSJ will fit your LE5... lemme explain...

the LE5 block is the strongest with its strength being owed to the way its cast, using sand for the mold rather than styrofoam, but it’s the same shape as the other blocks. ZZP uses the LE5 block to build a 2.1L LSJ by plugging in the LSJ internals... no mention of changing oil cooler to match the block or the car...

The oil cooler was removed because it was deemed unnecessary for a normally aspirated engine that wasn’t primarily used for racing (like the LSJ was)... likely either the whole oil filter area either changes out( I’ll look over my spare engine for signs that this is true) or they made a block off plate for the late LE5...

it it also stands to reason that GM wouldn’t make two different parts for two dimensionally identical engines, it would likely have cost too much... keep in mind they injured and or killed many people because of not wanting to spend an extra LESS THAN A DOLLAR on the ignition switch on their cars...

if I had my other LSJ handy I’d pull the oil cooler off and give to you to try out... sadly I don’t

Default Oil cooler

I have an 06 ion 3 with the 2.4 ecotec I've had it 11 years. The oil cooler is shot but obviously its discontinued I've read I can bypass but am advised against it does that 2.0 redline cooler actually fit?
i probably can get a junkyard one but skeptical

You might be able to get one from Bones' old LSJ.
He's living in a different state than the car but will have access to it eventually.

I'll ring him up.

I don't think we ever found out the answer to the question you asked.........
