car died while on highway

so i was driving down the highway and all of a sudden check engine light came on a the r.p.ms went crazy and it turned off so i hand no power steering. so i sit on the side of the road and it just wont turn over when trying to start it. so for some reason i get th ideal to take the gas cap off and try to start and it starts but it shoots up to like 4ooo rpms(automatic) when it comes back down i take off i get about 2 miles and it does the same thing but finaly the battery died. and now its on the sid of the highway. please help.

1999 sc1... got it started and rpms went crazy and c.e.s light cme on then we towed it home but when i drove it off the trailer , light was off and it drove fine, parked in driveway and last night tryed to start and battery was dead, it was 10 degrees out too.

OK - 2 "battery died" episodes indicates either charging system issues (alternator not charging battery) or battery not being able to hold a charge from the alternator or corroded battery cables not making good electrical contact.
Let''s see its a 99 so the original 3 yr crap battery is long gone (guess 2002), probably replaced by a 60 or 72 month (5 or 6 year) battery.
So I''m guesing your battery is unable to hold a charge......but we need to confirm.....
I would begin by jumpstarting the car in your driveway from a known good battery. Once started, let it run for at least 20 min (if it will) (to recharge the battery).
Turn it off. If you cannot restart (or even crank) the engine over, replace the battery. Watch for dash lights and CEL (SES) of course. If the SES comes on, PLEASE read the codes and post.
Once electrical issues are sorted out, we''ll tackle the rest....
