-Make sure the fan turns on at the correct temperature.
-Let the car reach operating temperature while driving it, then see if the transmission slams into reverse. (automatic only)
-Check for milky coolant.
-See if the service engine soon light is on
-Buy a locking gas cap and zip tie the keys to the oil dipstick. That way you are forced to check the oil every time you get gas.
