Wifes New Car

Is the transmission one of the new darlings of the auto industry, a variable speed belt drive system of some kind or another?
I dunno how many of them are out there at the present, but it seems that most of them are problem prone, expensive to maintain and many who had them no longer do.
One of the problems that surfaced on a friends car was that the engine would not do the equivelent of short shifting thus staying at the higher rpms longer when driven some what hard and gas mileage just dropped out the bottom.

I just ran across this post while looking for another. My above post also rings true when driving the Forte. I love the damn center gauge pod of the ION. Oh and the Forte gets as good of mpg as the ION. I dunno, I have yet to come across a car in the same class that can make me sell my ION.
