Guys, my uncle has been riding for almost 30 years. I have an uncle that was almost killed on a bike. I completely understand your concern, and believe me, I am taking every safety precaution I can.
Once I get it running, I plan on a windshield (just because of the damn bugs) and straight pipe the exhaust so people can hear me.
Not sure about the sound laws down here for vehicles, but I don't care. I was nice enough to keep the redline quiet, but its a bit harder to see a motorcycle.

I signed up for the Honda rebel forum so I can start learning a bit about bikes in general, plus the normal stuff I need to know and be aware of for that bike.

You all know I get a bit crazy in the redline, yes, but this is a whole different game. If anything happens in a car, theres a better chance at walking away from it than a bike.

This is just for fun, as a summer cruiser. No way in hell am I going to try and make a bike fast. Stock with straight pipes is good enough for me.

Looks like a great project, and when you decide to get a Harley, let me know, and I might get that off you(if Rube doesn't)... I would like to learn to ride a motorcycle, and a 250 Rebel is a great starting place... On several occasions I thought about a CBR250/250 Ninja but I think this will be even easier...

It sits really nice. And is really light (think it was around 600 pounds).

Being I have a line of people asking for it when I am done, ill make a deal.

First one to show up at my door with a set of LSJ stage 2 cams takes it

That looks like a lot of fun. I've wanted to learn for a while now, and the Rebel really looked like the place to start. Unfortunately, someone my wife knew was just killed when he was rear-ended by a van. So I won't be getting to do that, helmet or no!

That's sickening -- the images going through my mind.

RIP

I know. The news story described it all to well. The guy is just sitting at a stop waiting to turn left. Sometimes you can't avoid it... I wonder if he would have made it if he'd been wearing a helmet.

If the van was going 20+mph, he probably would have died from internal injuries. Think about the massive transfer of momentum and therefore energy that took place. The bike absorbed some but I bet the rest through him a great distance, or back onto the front of the van with incredible force.

Sorry to hear that :/
That's how my dad feels because his brother was almost killed on a bike. Needless to say he isn't happy about it.
I'm 21. I want to live a little. I grew up to fast to not enjoy the finer things a bit more.

That's the big thing my wife has against me getting a bike... The total lack of protection from the other idiots, and my tendency to go faster than others think I should... I just keep thinking about getting 50+mpg and not having a terrible time going to work...

you're not a lane splitter are you? (riding down the dotted yellow line betw miles of backed up traffic).

Until you rid the roads of all the automobile drivers who can't see, hear, or concentrate well enough to drive, the law of momentum + the vehicles' dissipation of energy rules any traffic collision regarding what gets mangled and who gets injured.

Unfortunately that means the motorcyclist will always be highly vulnerable to injury or worse----and people texting while driving makes now an especially dangerous time to hold the handlebars........
