Yes I am new to this forum and the 2007 Saturn Ion 3 . I picked it up for a very decent price. It has some problems but I am retired and I have time. Hopefully I can get all the bugs ironed out. It is definitely a nice car. It only has 115,000 miles on it. Not too bad for a car that old. I would like to thank everyone for their input on the questions I asked

The reluctor wheel is bolted to the crank not pressed on. I think further diagnosis is in order before tearing down the engine. I would recommend purchasing a factory service manual if you are so inclined.

There are other problems that will cause the issues you have. I would definitely follow Andy's advice. You don't want to tear down the engine for nothing and you don't want to shotgun parts, trying to guess at what is wrong. Neither are cost-effective until you have a diagnosis

I've been intrigued by this issue since it came up, so I did some research. There is a TSB from GM regarding this issue that came out in 2015. Apparently not a common issue, but it occurs enough that GM has acknowledged it and provided guidance on confirming the issue and how to correct it. The 2007 Saturn Ion with the 2.4L engine is included. (Correction is to replace affected camshaft, much easier to do than crankshaft reluctor replacement.)

With the engine timed correctly (chains, gears, tensioners, actuators, phasers, etc.) and still showing a P0016 and/or P0017, the problem may be a slipped reluctor on the intake and/or exhaust camshaft, (not crankshaft). The reluctors are press fit, not keyed, to the camshafts. See the link.

Clicking on that link directly downloads a PDF to your downloads folder but doesn't tell you and doesn't open it.
you have to open it manually.
