I have a 04 ion 4 door with only 33000 mi. and
in the las week it has started makeing a ratteling sound when I
first crank up and take off but I don't hear it at road speed ???
I have had the oil changed every 3000 mi. but the last time is when it
started sounding funny .

I was told that if oil other then 5 w 30 was put in the
lifters make sounds ?? any one know what I need to do "? by
the way it is just out of warntee by years not not miladge
!

is it a "rattling" sound or a "ticking" sound? out of curiosity, did you dump in oil other than 5w 30?

yea, it might just be a lifter or a cam due to loss of oil... when was the last time you changed your oil?

 

Gee Tim I read that wrong sorry .......... but let me ask howwe can diagnose a rattle sound you here with out us hearing it. It could be many many many things. Like the cat, the alt, the idler pully. Could be low on oil, might have a bad lifter or rocker. Motor mount could be going bad and causing the hood to rattle. So bear with me ifwe just can not analyze whats going on with your car without seeing the patient in person. The best thing you could do is to take your car to someone that knows Saturns and knows how to fix them. Unless you rather throw parts at it in hope you get lucky before you spend to much money fixing things it is not.

 

Hi cw2cam Of corce I know no one can diagnose a sound like
that ! what I was asking for is if this is something that is a
known trouble with the 2.2 saturn and I thought this would be the place
to ask . As this is the first Saturn Ive had and with only 33000
mi. on it I really didn't think it should be makeing any noise .I
did change oil last night and it did help so I guess it must be
the wrong waight oil was put it last week wear I had it changed .

Yes Tim..............it's a known trouble that cars find a way to rattle, things go wrong with cars, all cars no matter what make or model. I'd guess thats one of the reasons cars come with a warranty, and I'd guess thats why extended warranties are sold by just about everyoneand that may include your insurance company. Cars are known to rattle. Hubcaps break and the finish peals off. Rocks chip paint and windscreens. Coffee stains seat covers, tires wear out. The 2.2 has been in one Saturn or another starting in 2000. They do not have a history of falling apart. Putting 10-30 motor oil in it would not harm one thing other than the smallest amount of fuel mileage over many many many tanks of gas. If you keep hearing the said sound take your car in to have it looked at by a pro.Tell me Tim what part of the United States are you in. I see they spell many words "diberantly" in your neck of the woods.
