Default 1993 saturn sl2 exaust

Hello friends I have decided to keep my 93 Saturn sl2 and perhaps giving it a bit of new life and want to start small Ive worked on older cars back I the day so I know headers ,cam, intake and the old holly carb is a nice touch but Im a bit confused about the headers for the Saturn .If the exhaust splits but yet runs back to the same single pipe how is that allowing the car to breath ? or open it up to breath ? Is the main out pipe larger in diameter ? The exhaust is where I wanna start .any suggestions or thoughts would be appreciated . Thanks Jonas

1993 Saturn sl2
And YES I check my damn oil !! so I don't kill it !! LOL

Not sure which header you're looking at.
i think for these cars it is probably more a case of separating the flow from 1 and 4 (fire same time) to cut turbulence. Sane thing for 2 and 3, but also those paths are lengthened and equalized to match the length of 1 and 4 so that there is not any additional back pressure generated by exhaust gas from one cylinder pair hanging out and getting hit by the exhaust gases of the other cylinder pair.

Sounds totally logical to me.

Problem is I don't know squat about headers.

Hopefully someone else will come along and give you a better explanation.

I see kinda see what you are saying but the flow still goes into the same outlet pipe .I'm used to older cars where the flow is separated into 2 separate pipes or dual exhaust. But I think I see what you mean but will it help the Saturn breath or is it more of a show thing ,also I'm not looking at any particular type they all seem the same .its a 93 Saturn sl2 .

What you’re referring to is a 4-2-1 header, designed to improve torque across the band. Yes the final collector size is bigger than the primaries or even the secondary tubes, and it’ll flow better than any factory header due to its longer length and wider passages but they *should* be properly sized for the exhaust port size and the power/RPM you hope to make...
