Default VIN vs paperwork

Hiya,
I just bought a 1996 SL2 (per VIN) from a local lot. Their paperwork identifies it as a 1998 LS. This is what was sent to DMV also.

Will this cause a problem? After using a VIN decoder it was identified as an SL2, 1996. I used the VIN information when I purchased insurance - vs using the lot paperwork and description.

Is this correct?

I don't think it will be a problem as long as your vin matches your registration and title. But then again, I'm no lawyer so am not positive. The only thing I can see that MAY cause a problem is when you're looking for certain parts that may not interchange.

If the vin decoder is correct I believe this will be an issue if the car is misregistered with the DMV.
Based on your explanation, the car is now registered as a 98 LS -- which is what is on your registration card, yes?
But your insurance card indicates a 96 sl2....
So if you ever get pulled over you will never be able to explain it.

What is on the title?

Post a pic of your car---we'll confirm if it is an S car or an L car

Sounds like a "salvage yard" rebuild. Sometimes, those cars can be really reliable, but documentation can be tricky. Good luck

So far I've not received anything from DMV yet - just the slip that the lot put in my window. I would think the VIN would correct any typo's, mistakes, etc when DMV issues the new registration. I sure hope so.

I'll take some pics and post asap.

So far I like everything about the car. Cig lighter socket was not working, replaced the fuse and now it's fine. Great mpg so far and it sure has some get up and go.

You have a VIN on the car................DMV will go by the VIN not by what some dumbazz puts on the papper work.

Awesome. I thought that might be the case. Tried to upload a picture - but it's asking for an URL - rather than letting me upload. Oh well.

It does match every other SL model I've seen - so I'm confident it's good. Thanks all for the responses.

as the pessimist on the site, they should go by the VIN but when they read the application they might reject it b/c it doesn't match.

We'll see
