95 SL2 Temp Gauge - dead?
#1
The temp gauge in my newly aquired 95 SL2 (1.9 DOHC 5spd) is not working. I replaced both the temp sensor and the temp switch located by the T-stat. I even tried swapping which wire went to which sensor. Nada. The gauge just lays flat and doesn't move.
I do know the engine was changed in the vehicle prior to me getting it.
Any ideas?
Thanks

Theres two temperature sensors. Are they both plugged in? Sounds like the one for the PCM is plugged in and not the one for the gauge. If the person who replaced the engine put in a 1996 or newer engine, the location for the second temperature sensor will not be there. You'll have to drill and tap a location for your own.

Both sensors are there. Even pulled one off the old engine and put it in. Same result.
Does the top one get the single green wire or the red/black wire?
Are the sensors themselves the same part (interchangable?)
Thanks

Everything else is 100%. Radiator fan kicks on properly. (with or without a/c going).
So, does the single wire get plugged into the top sensor or the bottom?
I have 2 spare engines to pull sensors from so if all else fails may try swapping again.
Thanks!

i have just picked up a 1996 SL 1.9 5 speed 2 days ago. i was lettin the car idle while i was setting the radio after finding a blown fuse, shortly after the car started to idle up to about 1500 and down to around 700 or 800 RPM. after that hte car quit. i tryed to get it started again and came to notice that the temp gauge was not reading anything after the car was idleing for over 15 min.
i thought it was an ignition problem untill i let the car just sit for about 30 min and went back out to start it. i fianlly got the car to start and drove it about 1/4 mile down the road and was talkin to my buddy untill i noticed it started to do the same thing but i looked at the temp gage and it would go from half to 1/4 in a blink. the fan runs constantly also. it seems just as soon as the fan shuts off the car starts to staul out.
any tips on what the problem could be i was hopeing this car would replace my 95 corsica that i ran to the ground. lol
