1999 SC2 stuck in 5th gear
thereare several pagesdevoted to a bearing that breaks and leaves the car stuck in gear. I torethe middle consoleappart and it looks like something is not working with my gear shift assembly but it isnt the problem people usually have. The gear shift lever wont move very much side-to-side (It stays in gear however I move it) and thecable closest to the driverdoesnt move. Has anyone experienced a problem like this in the past? Am I likely to have to replace the entire gear shift mount? I dont see anyway to remove the plastic piece that Im guessing is broken. I have a labeled picture to help show my situation.

Start by disconnecting the cables and check to see if the problem is in the stick or not. Then check the cables, maybe one froze on you. I've run into similar problems on my wife's 57' Chevy and it was just a problem in the shifter on the column, nothing wrong with the transmission or linkage (<-hard line, not cable).
Check your sh*ter cables at the trans. Also look for the same thing at the shifter end. If you see bare cables where the covering seems to be gone. You need to replace the cables. I have never seen one BREAK but they do stretch.

i have the same problem only mine is stuck in third. but the plastic peice thatyou say appears to be broke looks the same as mine. i am goin to take it to saturn and see what they tell me. Then i will let you know.
samscool, if you are having trouble repeatedly it sounds like you are try to force the gears. Being cable driven, the linkage cannot be forced such as a hardline and has to "pull itself into gear." Forcing it will only cause continuous problems.
