Tire review: Mastercraft Glacier Trex
It’s come time for winter tires on my Saturn and being the cheap a$$ that I am, instead of a Michelin or Bridgestone or Nokian winter tire I went back to Mastercraft, only to find they had replaced their venerable Glacier-Grip II with this. Priced at $85 each mounted in a 205/65-15, they represent good value in today’s market with tires becoming increasingly expensive. Being a non LRR winter tire I’m only running these at 45psi versus 55, and as a result of this and the soft tread compound characteristic of a snow tire they retain adequate grip but have much more tread squirm and sidewall flex than the tires they replaced. Not a danger but given the highly focused chassis it now feels like I’m trying to write with the most precise and beautiful calligraphy pen while wearing mittens. Given the deep treads and the large voids and lots of siping they should do great in the snow or mud (or Gods forbid I take my lowered car with track focused suspension off road), I’m waiting to see if we get much of a winter and how mobile I’ll remain in it. I’ll grab a pic tomorrow in the light
