I'm looking to buy a used VUE. Seems fine although it is high mileage. The clutch pedal is quite low though, has to be pushed firmly to the floor.

Does this denote a clutch on it's last legs? Can the pedal be adjusted?

If I understand you correctly, the pedal must be pushed firmy to the floor to disengage the clutch.

Are you saying that the pedal, when not pushed, is sitting very low near the floor and not much travel is available and you must press against the floor to disengage the clutch
or
are you saying that the pedal starts in its normal position but does not disengage the clutch unless you smush it to the floor??

 

I should have paid more attention as I can't accurately answer your questions. It's been a while since I drove a manual. I think there was a lot of travel before the clutch engaged. From a dead stop it grabs almost instantly, I killed/stalled it the first time. To start it the clutch pedal has to be on the floor, is that normal? I'm going back tomorrow, can you advise what I should look for? BTW is has ~212,000 miles on. He has replaced many parts, including a timing chain, fan belt and tensioner, front ball joints, rotors and all brakes etc. He has the necessary documentation.

The Vue has a hydraulic clutch similar to my L series Saturn. There is a starter interlock on the clutch pedal so it is normal to have to push the clutch to start. It sounds like there is air trapped in the hydraulics on the Vue. It is possible that bleeding the system might correct the issue of lots of freeplay and having to bury the pedal to release the clutch. My clutch releases and engages near the top with very little freeplay.

 

You said it grabs right away on the way up.
How about where does it begin to disengage on the way down?

Ask him if the clutch hydraulics have ever been replaced.

For ****s, ask him why he did the chain and if he did a whole timing set or just the chain.

That mileage def ask if clutch has been serviced. Most likely leaky tob.
could be clutch master going out too.
