Where can I find a replacement remote keyless entry module?

97 SL1

Part number 21024608

I need to replace this item in my car it’s causing a serious parasitic drain

is there a year range this would be compatible with my SL1?

Where in here have things gone wrong?
97 sl1 rke schematics

im not sure? How would I figure that out?

RKE modules for 97 SL1 are discontinued by all parts manufacturers. They are only available through salvage or private sellers.

I also own a 97 SL1.

Please share the actual symptoms of the problem you are experiencing. How did you determine that the cause of the problem is the RKE module?

Battery kept draining and the horn would randomly honk intermittently like that car was being locked.

Took the car to my local mechanic

they did a parasitic draw test and found 100 milliamps draw

they tracked it down to the body control fuse, removed the fuse and saw the draw went to zero

they then tested all the modules on that fuse and isolated it to the RKE module.

Assuming the battery drain was the indication of a problem, did the horn chirp continuously for hours uninterrupted or did it occur only after the battery was pretty drained?

Did the horn ever chirp while the engine was running?
Does the rke system otherwise function properly?
Does the security system ever trip for seemingly no reason?

If the chirping only occurs after the battery has significantly drained, i suspect it may be doing so b c the system voltage/current is too low for the electronics to operate properly.

It may have gotten into programming mode and is stuck there

Answers to the above questions should help to narrow this down.

The horn would randomly chirp continuously for hours until the battery drained only when the car is off, but never when it was on.

i am not completely sure if it chirped specifically when the battery was low or drained. I just assumed it did so randomly.

the car will lock and unlock normally using the key fob and the security system has never tripped from these issues

So it would intermittently have a chirping fit that drained the battery, But the occurrence of the chirping fit itself was instrument?

Eek.

My question was sort of a chicken / egg question. Was the RKE specifically draining the battery in the form of a horn chirp, or was a drained battery responsible for erratic behavior of the RKE?

What's the timing of the chirps? Like one per second or something longer? I ask because the horn chirp sequence when the security system thinks it's tripped is about six or seven one second spaced chirps. Basically I'm trying if possible figure out what function is going awry. Does necessarily mean it can be fixed, but it may help us to determine whether it is the actual module electronics a programming issue.

The way I understand this schematic, there needs to be a discrete request for each horn chirp. So something in the circuit would have to actively trigger that over and over.

The fact that the system works as advertised in light of all of this seems rather amazing.
