I just got a 1997 SL1, SOHC, with 117k miles. The engine bay was very clean, which I didn't like -- usually means someone is trying to hide something. The hoses seemed to be in good condition, couldn't tell about the accessory belt.

I was told that these cars have a timing chain, and I'm pretty sure they're interference motors. Can I call BS on the timing chain claim, and when does it need to be changed out?

What powertrain "gotchas" do I have to worry about with these cars? It's a 5 speed manual. What are my tuning options?

These engines do have a timing chain and they are interference engines. Timing chain life depends on how well the engine was taken care of by the previous owner. If the owner kept up on oil changes, it should last another 100,000 miles or so. If they didnt, look at replacing it soon.

Only tuning option you have is installing a DOHC motor.
