weird oil leak...??? 95 sl2

Hello. I'm new here, first post. I recently recieved a 1995 saturn SL 2 from a friend. 116,000 mi.. He had a disagreement with some ice the other day, the shop wanted 2k to fix the rear driver hub, rotor, lat. Links... Everything. He decided against that, and to give it to me. J did work on it (brakes) for a fraction of what the shop wanted. So i guess he gave it to me as a gift for just being awesome. Now i nees to so the brakes again... But, the issues... It doesn't start now. Turns over, no start. Fuel pump kicks on. I checked the spaek plug wires real quick. Couldn't find anything. It just will not start. Any ideas? Also... There is oil all over the valve cover... A thick layer.... doesm't literally leak though.. I'm concerned. Any ideas? Will post pics tomorrow! Thank you!

So what your saying is..................

1-The car was wrecked
2-The car turns over and will not start
3-The car has an oil leak

Does that sum it up?

Hope to see some pics ...

Yep after all that I'd like to see some pictures, because spelling is not his strong point.

Rubehayseed 01-16-2013 03:18 PM

Are you getting spark at the plugs? I'm not sure if you are or not. You need spark, fuel, air and compression in order for it to start. If you have no spark, then it could be any number of things. Such as a bad coil or even a crank position sensor. Run the codes on it and post the numbers here.

RjION 01-16-2013 04:09 PM

Has the car started since the wreck?

91esgt-sl2 01-18-2013 12:18 AM

I was in a rush to have the post posted before I had to return to work. Sorry for all of the spelling issues. Matter of fact, spelling is a strong point for me... Life is full of unexpectedness. Therefore, I have not had the chance to snap some shots. I will in the morning, for sure this time.

91esgt-sl2 01-18-2013 12:22 AM

I have not gotten into the starting issue as far as I had wanted to yet. It was wrecked, but in no way was the engine or even front end affected, as far as I am understood. I plan I'm borrowing a code reader tomorrow when I get up, so I can get things started here. Thank you all.

OceanArcher 01-18-2013 03:06 PM

Post the code numbers here, and these bulging brains around here will help figgure it out ...

91esgt-sl2 01-21-2013 01:46 AM

It's a 95, it's obd-1. So the shop does not carry the correct diagnostic tool. So how else would i pull codes? Buy one? Not sure what to do about that part. Also, i can't post pics on my phone. Bummer! So i will go on the computer real soon and do that. Thank you guys. Also, i thought perhaps the pcv valve is clogged? There is oil all over inside the intake sys.. Small puddle in the throttle body. Is there a switch that could have been flipped when the collision happened? Where might that be? My 91 Escort GT has one, it shuts off the fuel distribution. I also checked the spark tips on the coil packs. The whole unit(s) look original. Corrosion, dirt, etc. maybe they finally are done? Not 100% sure where, what to look at/for.

91esgt-sl2 01-21-2013 01:59 AM

Oh, and i got the physical damage fixed. Now it just needs to run! Pretty exciting.

derf 01-24-2013 10:15 AM

the codes for odbI can be read using a paperclip -- search "paper clip" or similar on the forum. It's all there.

Have you confirmed spark at the plugs?
Have you confirmed fuel pressure at the rail under the hood?

91esgt-sl2 01-24-2013 01:23 PM

I have confirmed, there is NO spark at the plugs. Have not checked fuel pressure... Going to get a gauge today. Paper clip.... Looking up.
Thank you.

91esgt-sl2 01-24-2013 01:46 PM

WICKED!!! Paper clip method is AWESOME! hahaha... I guess i got a code 33.. Again, it does not spark. I purchased 2 new coil packs. It still didn't spark. (did that yesterday). So i took them back and got my 80 dollar back. Code 33, also the key was just in the "ON" positon.. Readings should still turn out correct?

derf 01-24-2013 03:09 PM

33 is map sensor out of range (high)
This should have no bearing on spark though (*someone chime in if I'm wrong)

Might be crank position sensor, which, if not working, inhibits spark. You can test that with an ohmmeter --700-900 ohms is typical. 0 or open is not. They can flake intermittently but yours if defective is likely sending no signal.

Other causes could be the dis module that sits under the coils.

OR it could be wiring knocked loose during the collision since my suggestions of failed components have no connection to a car that had no front end damage. I doubt the shock of the impact would wreck either of these parts but who knows

and I'm not a fan of changing parts willy nilly

91esgt-sl2 01-24-2013 04:23 PM

My eyes decieve me! It's actually a code 12! My friend took a look at the paper clip method when we got back with the map sensor from autozone, he looked at it and he said that's a code 12... Because it's one blink... Then 2 more... Then a longer pause... Then repeats... So... That means nothings recorded in memory... Now what... Where is crank sensor at? I am checking spark again.

derf 01-24-2013 04:36 PM

view BOTH of these

(testing for spark across the coils)

(replacing the CPS)

you do not need to remove the starter

edit: wow never embedded videos before....

91esgt-sl2 01-24-2013 05:11 PM

Good videos. I tested, there is spark! Wonder what I did wrong. It Sparks... But still will not start. Fuel pressure test next I guess. After that, then what? I do hear for sure the fuel pump. What else could be the colprut?

RjION 01-24-2013 05:19 PM

One simple question goes without an answer, yet the OP wants help from members.

Has the car started since the wreck?

91esgt-sl2 01-24-2013 05:19 PM

Taking back new map sensor. Still a spark, no start :( getting fuel gage later.

91esgt-sl2 01-24-2013 05:20 PM

I think I'll install a new fuel filter.

91esgt-sl2 01-25-2013 02:23 AM

No. It has not started once. i apologize....

91esgt-sl2 01-25-2013 02:55 PM

I plugged in my new fuel pressure tester.. It reads zero... While in the "ON" position... I crank it over.... Zero.... But I thought I hear the fuel pump.... It's a little buzz sound for like 2 seconds.... I don't have a fuel leak anywhere I can see. It has 1/2 to 3/4 a tank. Not even a drop of fuel on the schrader valve. Or anywhere.

derf 01-25-2013 05:01 PM

the sound you are hearing is the fuel pump relay engaging for several seconds to prime the line to appropriate pressure before the car is started. If there is not a drop of fuel from depressing the schraeder valve either fuel filter is plugged (not likely to happen from an accident), there is a wiring issue to/from the fuel pump, or the pump is bad, the fuel pump relay is bad, the fuel pump fuse is blown, or there is a leak (or something I forgot)

That's my 2 cents -- someone else please chime in

mrpontiac66 02-03-2013 02:32 AM

Correct me if I'm wrong gentlemen but if the Engine coolant temperature sensor, with the plastic end is cracked, or not functional can't that cause the no start issue as well?? I seem to remember replacing this on my 1998 SL2 after checking the crank position sensor, ignition control module and coils, and everything checking out just fine.

RjION 02-03-2013 06:06 AM

Read the sticky ETCS posted in the General forum.

derf 02-03-2013 10:56 PM

indeed can be the case, but not likely to have failed during the accident...if it is the original it needs replacing. Anything is possible.

But when a fuel pressure reading comes back zero, me leans towards fuel system issue.
