Hello! I am new to this site and had some questions. My wife has a 1999 Saturn SL2 with the 1.9l DOHC twin cam engine. The problem is that about a week ago, the engine seized up. She failed to have the oil change done on it and the motor locked up. I was wondering if there is a better engine that i could but into the car (such as the 2.2 supercharged engine that came in the Ion) or do i have to buy the same engine? And what would be better: rebuild or new engine?

I was also quoated $4300 for a remanufactured engine. Is that too high?

You can only use a Saturn 1.9L engine in the car. 1999-2002 will be a direct drop in.

$4300 is outrageous for a rebuilt engine. I've rebuilt Saturn engines for local people and for myself for about half that. If you use the correct parts, a rebuilt engine is superior than a crate motor from Saturn. You can pick and choose the best parts over the 11 years that engine was built.

i had a siezed engine in my 96 sl1. i called the local junk yard and bought a used one with 30,000 less miles for 800 bucks. had it installed at a local shop, it took about a week and over all spent 1200. beats a reman, and it sounds quieter to, try it,

It will work in a 1993-2002. And it is brand new. I bought it from a local GM parts warehouse that had it listed on craigslist.

You wont be able to get one at $800. You also wont be able to order it directly from the warehouse. You'll have to get it through your local Saturn parts department. And in that case, the same engine will run about $4800.

Okay. But there seems to be some information that is messed up here. Low Saturn- you said that the engine is for 1993-2002. But earlier in this post you said 1999-2002. Which years am i looking for and what one is the best?

And heres a dumb question. I was told buy the garage that it has a 1.9 DOHC. But the block says Twin Cam. What is the differance if any?

In your case a 1998 or 1999 will be a direct drop in. 1993-2002 will work, but some fuel system components will need to be swapped.

No difference. DOHC stands for Dual (as in two or twin) Over Head Cam.Edited by: Low Saturn
