Hi. I took my 1998 SL1 Saturn to AutoZone today for the free serviceengine light test. They told me it could be a few things:

1. Gas cap is bad - I had this problem before about 3 months ago and replaced the gas cap, so I have ruled this out.

2. He told me it could be a bad gas valve?

3. Also suggested it could be my vacuum line?

Any ideas on this? I'd like any input on cost, and/or difficulty of fixing these problems before i take my car to a mechanic.

Thanks in advance!!Edited by: Cloud323

Your mistake was taking advice from someone that has a code reader in his hand instead of insisting on reading and writing down the code(s) for yourself. One of the beginnings for troubleshooting would be to record the codes from the scanner/reader and ignoring the suggestions from the person performing the reading. How do you know if this person is certified as an automotive technician? You don't and can be misled easily at your expense and Autozone's profit. Write the codes down and post them. You can interpret the codes for yourself also if you Google saturn sites for specific Saturn OBD I or II codes.

Thanks ducky. I'm going to take it back and get those codes written down.
