Default New guy with 01 SL1 SOHC

Hi guys, I'm new to the forum and just recently was given a 2001 Saturn SL1 with the SOHC engine. The engine has had a SES light coming off and on for the last month. I had the codes pulled and it has had a 0410 code and the engine misfire on cyl 1 code. I've checked the usual suspects the tube coming from the airpump and is was totally filled with carbon. Cleaned the air pump tube and manifold and it went off for a while. The engine seems to have a high idle around 1200 after it settles down. Pulled the throttle body off and it was totally carboned up. Thought the throttle body being cleaned would stop the high idle. I've also checked to see if the number 1 cylinder had a leak. I sprayed some water close to where the #1 intake manifold was bolted and nothing happend. Could it be the air pump not working? Since I've cleaned a whole bunch of carbon out of everything should I also clean the EGR valve as well? I would love to figure out whats keeping the idle so high, if you guys can help it would be awesome!! thanks in advance..

Use carb cleaner, use throttle body cleaner, use wd40. Water doesn't work.

Since everything else seems to be full of carbon, pull the EGR valve and check it out. The pintle on the bottom could be carboned up and the passage on the intake is probably full of carbon too. Take a stiff wire and clean the passage and CAREFULLY scrape any carbon off the pintle. You can crank the engine before putting the EGR valve back on and that will help blow out the carbon that you've loosened in the passage.
